Yarn export in May maintains a tad below April levels

Total merchandised exports in May 2021 were at US$32.27 billion, as compared to US$ 19.05 billion in May 2020, up by 69% per cent. In INR terms, exports were INR2,364 billion in May 2021, as against INR1,442 billion in May 2020, registering a growth of 64%.

Among textiles, the commodities/commodity groups which have recorded positive growth during May 2021 against May 2020 were jute mfg. including floor covering (256%), man-made yarn/fabs./made-ups etc. (146%), cotton yarn/fabs./made-ups, handloom products etc. (138%), RMG of all textiles (114%), and carpet (108%).

In its monthly report Textile Beacon has intentionally refrained from analyzing year on year comparison (May 2021 over May 2020) since May 2020 was a month of Covid-19 lockdown with values abysmally low and outliers to the trend.

Basic textiles comprising fibres, spun and filament yarns shipment were worth US$968 million or INR7.066 crore, accounting for about 3% of total merchandise exported from India during the month.

All Yarn Export

Spun yarns shipment totaled 135 million kg worth US$481 million or INR3,500 crore. The unit value realization of all types of spun yarn averaged US$3.57 per kg. Bangladesh was the largest imported of spun yarns during the month, followed by China and Egypt.

Cotton yarn export

Cotton yarn export was at 106 million kg worth US$396 million (INR2,894 crore). These were shipped to 77 countries at an average price of US$3.72 a kg, up US cents 2 from previous month. Bangladesh was the top imported of cotton yarn, followed by China, Portugal, Vietnam, and Egypt.

Non-cotton yarn export

100% man-made fibre yarns exports were at 9.5 million kg, comprising 2.9 million kg of viscose yarn, 4.1 million kg of polyester yarn and 2.3 million kg of acrylic yarn. Viscose yarn was worth US$10 million or INR75 crore, exported at an average price of US$3.49 per kg in May. The major market was Bangladesh, fol-lowed by Turkey and Belgium. Polyester spun yarns export was worth US$9.7 million exported at average unit price of US$2.36 a kg. Brazil was the largest importer of polyester yarn, followed by USA and Turkey.

Blended yarn export

Blended spun yarns worth US$58 million were exported in May, including 13 million kg of PC yarns and 3.6 million kg of PV yarns. Bangladesh was the largest importers of PC yarn from India followed by Egypt while Turkey was the single largest importer of PV yarns from India followed by Vietnam.
