Yarn export from India halves in May 2022 as prices surged

Basic textiles comprising fibres, spun and filament yarn export shipments in May 2022, were worth US$573 million or INR4,448 crore, accounting for just over 1.5% of total merchandise exported from India during the month. Compared to a year ago, they were down 25% both in INR and US$ terms. In the same comparison, the INR depreciated over 6% against the US$.

Spun yarn

Spun yarn export shipment totaled 71 million kg worth US$320 million or INR2,480 crore, down 30% year on year. The unit value realization of all types of spun yarn averaged US$4.52 per kg. Bangladesh was the largest market for spun yarns during the month, followed by Turkey and Egypt.

Cotton yarn

Cotton yarn export was at 47 million kg worth US$237 million (INR1,840 crore). Volume shipment was down 56% year on year, while revenue-earning fell 40% in US$ term. These were shipped to 68 countries at an average price of US$5.07 a kg, up US cents 18 from the previous month and up US$1.34 from May 2021. Bangladesh was the top importer of cotton yarn, followed by Egypt, Portugal, Vietnam, and Italy. China reduced its import from India by 97% in May 2022. Shipment to Bangladesh also declined 30% while that to Egypt was down 15%.

Non-cotton yarn

100% man-made fibre yarn export shipments were at 10.19 million kg, comprising over 5.72 million kg of polyester yarn, 2.72 million kg of acrylic yarn and 1.41 million kg of viscose yarn. Viscose yarn worth US$6 million or INR47 crore was exported at an average price of US$4.27 per kg in April. The major market was Italy, followed by Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Turkey. Polyester spun yarns export was worth US$15 million exported at average unit price of US$2.68 a kg. Turkey was the largest importer of polyester yarn, followed by USA and Morocco.

Blended yarn

Blended spun yarns worth US$50 million were exported in May, including 8.55 million kg of PC yarns and 3.76 million kg of PV yarns. Honduras was the top importers of PC yarn from India followed by Egypt and Bangladesh while Turkey was the single largest importer of PV yarns from India followed distantly by Vietnam.

Filaments

All kinds of filament yarns shipment totaled 49 million kg, worth US$97 million or INR755 crore.
